HCC has acquired an aircraft to use in its comprehensive aviation maintenance technician program. The plane – a single-engine Cessna 150 – will be housed at the college’s North Forest campus.

Houston Community College will hold its Women in Apprenticeship Summit 2022 on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2022 to mark the 85th Anniversary of the National Apprenticeship Act and National Apprenticeship Week.

Miami Dade College (MDC), in partnership with Houston Community College (HCC) and Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD), has been awarded $2.8 million from the National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education (NSF ATE) program to create the National Applied Artificial Intelligence Consortium (NAAIC), a groundbreaking initiative that aims to foster the growth of technician-level artificial intelligence (AI) professionals across the nation.

The Texas economy continues to grow and attract jobs, leading the nation in the number of roles created. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, from March 2023 to March this year, the state added 270,700 jobs–the most for any state in the nation.

Patrick Mayorquin joined several of his classmates for a celebratory lunch highlighting the one-year anniversary of a grant provided by Johnson Controls to educate future workers in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), fire and security fields. The $100,000 grant has provided $1,000 individual scholarships to 45 students in the program.

In 2022, the City of Houston received a $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor for a solar jobs program to provide career opportunities for residents without college degrees and living in under-resourced and underserved neighborhoods. The city turned to HCC for help in putting training in place. The college received about $250,000 to cover tuition, fees, tools and exams to train interested students in solar photovoltaic installation skills through next summer.

Representatives from the Consular Corps of Houston heard Houston Community College (HCC) Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D., call for closer collaboration to find and train international students for meaningful workforce jobs in the region’s robust economy.

When the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges approved two new baccalaureate degree programs at Houston Community College, it enlarged the pipeline to jobs for thousands in the college’s service area.

In a heartening act of philanthropy, Patsy Chappelear recently donated $30,000 to the Houston Community College Foundation. The fund, named the Patsy S. Chappelear Engineering Endowed Scholarship Fund, will provide scholarships of $1,000 each year to qualified HCC engineering students.

The Houston Community College Transportation Center of Excellence - Electric Vehicle training program received a donation of $200,000 at the HCC Board of Trustees meeting on May 15. Funds are being used to provide an eight-hour safety and fundamentals course for more than 300 City of Houston’s and Harris County fleet department employees.

Due to widespread damage and power outages across the region, all HCC campuses will be closed Friday, May 17. Classes will resume Monday, May 20. Spring commencement ceremonies scheduled for 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. May 17, at NRG Arena have been canceled and will be rescheduled for a later date.

Houston Community College Central and Johnson Controls partnership is allowing HCC students to train for in-demand jobs in fields such as HVAC, fire, security and more.

The Houston Community College Central College will host the 2024 Spring Fashion Show on May 3. The event has the theme of Chromatique and will feature fashion visions from 14 graduating design students. Models will walk the runway at 7:30 p.m. at the William W. Harmon Building on the HCC Central Campus at 1300 Holman Street.

Christopher Daza of HCC Coleman College brings home the Texas Society of Radiologic Technologists educator award on April 12.

These workshops are designed to equip individuals with essential digital skills and empower them to thrive in today's technology-driven world. The workshops will be offered on a regular basis, and participants do not need to be HCC students to attend.

The success of the Texas A&M University-Chevron Engineering Academy at Houston Community College has resulted in the largest academy in Texas with a total of 113 students in its Fall 2023 cohort. This cohort is also the largest since the academy was founded in 2015.

When officials at Houston Community College (HCC) saw a decline for the third consecutive year in the National Council Licensure Examination pass rate of its Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) students, they thoughtfully decided to voluntarily close the program. The goal: Strengthen curriculum alignment, ease transition into offerings of academic courses and ensure student success. 

A reskilling grant will help 40 people earn a Sterile Processing certificate from HCC for free and enter the workforce in approximately six months.

On March 23, scores of Houston-area middle school students will converge at HCC for the HCC Scripps Regional Bee with the winners moving on to the national Bee May 26 in National Harbor, Maryland.

Autonomous, hybrid and electric vehicles are transforming the challenges faced by traditional mechanics and technicians and increasingly require updated skills. Hundreds of medical imaging technology students from Greater Houston attended the 2023 Houston Area Radiologic Consortium (HARC) today for a day of academic enrichment and professional networking. Houston Community College (HCC) cybersecurity students placed in the top 10 percent of competitors at the spring National Cyber League competition against 7,800 students from 450 universities and colleges across the U.S. The HCC student team placed in the top 10 percent of finishers, ahead of student teams from Purdue University and the University of California San Diego.

Graduation is always a highlight of the spring at Houston Community College (HCC) and this year, more than 1,700 students graduated at HCC’s spring graduation at NRG Stadium. The petrochemical industry must rely on highly-trained personnel to keep production processes safe and to respond to incidents that can happen in the manufacturing environment. To prepare graduates for work in the industry, Houston Community College is participating in the North American Process Technology Alliance (NAPTA) Troubleshooting Skills Competition.

HCC will be authorized to offer training to instructors to deliver MSSC’s CPT 4.0 e-learning courseware, and its hands-on Certified Production Technician Plus (CPT+) program using the highly innovative “Skill Boss” training and testing device invented by Amatrol, the nation’s leading manufacturer of industrial technician training equipment.

The $3.3 million grant will go toward HCC Central’s efforts to prepare students to graduate from high school, enroll into a post-secondary program and complete their programs of study. Funding will be distributed over the next five years to offer pre-college support services to 131 students a year.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has donated $25,000 to support HCC’s Public Safety program and students. The donation was made before the HCC Board of Trustees at a meeting on May 19, 2022. Since 2017, the longtime area organization has awarded $200,000 to the HCC Public Safety Center of Excellence and an additional $20,000 in private scholarships to HCC students.

The HCC Katy campus Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program has moved from Katy to its new home at the HCC Spring Branch campus, just in time for the 2022 summer sessions. A manufacturing industry organization has donated $40,000 to Houston Community College to help students to succeed in skilled trade careers. The PVF Roundtable donation this month brings the organization’s total charitable contributions to the college to $150,000 since 2017 to fund scholarships for students to pursue jobs in manufacturing such as a welder, manual machinist, CNC machinist and industrial mechanic.

Houston Community College has won the 2022 Bellwether Award for its outstanding and innovative workforce development program: HCC’s Entrepreneurial Initiatives. The Bellwether Awards are widely regarded as one of the nation’s most competitive and prestigious recognitions for community colleges.

Earning an HCC diesel maintenance and repair certificate is a challenge that requires mechanical knowledge and the ability to master technologies used in the much-in-demand field. HCC student Leon Hosea is working hard to achieve that goal. But mastering the curriculum and showing his skills aren’t the only hurdles he must clear. Hosea lost his vision in 2014, which meant suspending his career as an aviation mechanic.

After two years of academic grind, Denzel Wilson is counting the days to a milestone in his quest for a tech career. In May, he will walk the stage for a degree in artificial intelligence.
