HCC Central Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Nelson Simpson
Oct 22, 2025
We are proud to spotlight Dr. Nelson Simpson who successfully completed his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, specializing in Higher Education From the University of Phoenix. His doctoral graduation ceremony took place on September 27, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada, marking the culmination of an intense and transformative academic journey.
“Education has always held deep meaning for me. Growing up as a minority during the 1960s and 1970s, I was blessed with parents and teachers who believed that education was the gateway to a better life,” Dr. Simpson said.
Reflecting on the process, Dr. Simpson, who also is a U.S. Army veteran, regards the trials and growth he experienced as foundational to his capacity to lead and mentor others in higher education.
“Ironically, it was during my service—while stationed in Germany—that I rediscovered my intellectual curiosity,” he said. “I began taking college courses after duty hours and, with the encouragement of dedicated professors, realized that I was indeed ‘college material.’ That moment of realization set me on a lifelong path of learning and teaching.”
He shares that the challenges he overcame have deepened his empathy, sharpened his insight, and enhanced his commitment to serve those he guides. In this way, his doctoral journey has not only affirmed his own scholarly and leadership capabilities but has also equipped him to support others in realizing their educational goals.
Dr. Simpson’s motivation to complete his doctorate degree was deeply personal.
“After the passing of my beloved parents, I reflected on their legacy of faith, hard work, and belief in education” he said. “Out of nine children, many of my siblings earned associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degrees—but none had yet earned a doctorate. Completing this degree was my way of honoring my parents’ vision and demonstrating that their sacrifices were not in vain.”
Today, Dr. Simpson stands as both a product and a champion of education - grateful for the opportunity to continue serving students, families, and communities through teaching and leadership.
We congratulate Dr. Nelson Simpson on this landmark achievement and eagerly anticipate the contributions he will make to the field of higher-education leadership.
