Professional Development Training Requirements
Based on Chapter 805 Adult Education and Literacy Rules

July 1st begins our new fiscal year 2017 - 2018. Clock hour Professional Development training requirements* are as follows:

15 | Literacy Instructor 15 Hours must include: 3 clock hours of Principles of Adult Learning 6 clock hours in relevant areas of literacy instruction and 6 clock hours at the discretion of the program that consist of content related to the AEL program’s purpose (6 clock hours of content area professional development may be waived for individuals who have 18 or more college semester undergraduate or graduate hours in relevant areas of literacy instruction. This waiver is permanent. However, these individuals must complete 3 clock hours of Principles of Adult Learning and 3 clock hours in the relevant areas of literacy instruction. This potential waiver is optional, at the discretion of the local program.) |
Exempt if they fit the definition of a Substitute Instructor | Substitute Instructor - An instructor who works on call, does not have a full-time assignment, and does not assume permanent responsibilities for class instruction. An individual is considered a substitute if he or she instructs a particular class for four or fewer consecutive class meetings. |

Resources
Texas Research-based Adult Instruction Network (TRAIN)
The TRAIN PD Consortium at TCALL is responsible for delivering state-directed training, including training-of-trainer (TOT) events, an informational clearinghouse and other resources to support local programs, students, and stakeholders, and online options aimed to build access and responsiveness to training content. PD Specialists within the consortium are responsible for deploying statewide PD activities, identifying and recruiting additional contract trainers, developing and delivering training throughout the state, including training for digital delivery, and assisting local grant recipients with local PD planning and services.

Professional Development
Professional Development for HCC Adult Education is coordinated through The Region VI Education Service Center of TRAIN PD. We strive to provide a variety of training opportunities to enhance the teaching skills and support skills of our staff and that of our Community Partners of the Houston Literacy Consortium to ultimately serve our students in the best way possible.
