HCC galvanizes input from business, economic leaders to help inform the college’s long-term workforce preparedness plans

Sep 16, 2022

Houston Community College (HCC) Chancellor Cesar Maldonado, Ph.D., P.E., met with 39 key leaders from business, industry and economic development at HCC’s West Houston Institute recently to launch a new collaboration focused on addressing the region’s long-term workforce training needs.

The meeting was the first of the newly formed Chancellor’s Business Champions Council (CBCC) and represented some of the largest employers in the Houston metropolitan area.

“The workforce needs of our region and state are changing rapidly, and HCC needs to hear how these changes are affecting your companies,” Maldonado said. “We desire to know how we can actively respond to provide workforce training and education to support your success. We need your views on where we need to be five- and 10-years in the future; we want to ‘skate to where the puck is going, not to where it’s been,’” he said, referencing a quote attributed to former NHL great Wayne Gretzky.

The blue-ribbon council met for three hours, approving bylaws, hearing workforce and economic reports for the region and discussing a variety of workforce opportunities, and challenges expressed by council members.

Chancellor Maldonado introduced Sally Putman of INEOS as the council’s chair, along with Vice Chair Lynne Harkel-Rumford of CenterPoint Energy, and Secretary Adrienne Moeller of Houston Methodist.

“Our partnership with each of these businesses will help HCC successfully address the workforce readiness initiative,” Maldonado said. “Whether it is through programmatic offerings like apprenticeships, internships, clinicals, or other employer-desired training, our students will be ready to meet existing and future workforce demands.”
