HCC Engineering Center of Excellence names new dean
May 19, 2023
Dr. Mehmet Argin has been named Dean of HCC Engineering Center of Excellence after an exhaustive and highly competitive search.
Dr. Argin joined Houston Community College in 2017 as a full-time instructor in the Engineering COE. He served in the faculty senate and was a member of the 2018-19 cohort in the Chancellor’s Innovative Leadership Academy. Dr. Argin later led the Global Energy COE as dean from January 2020 to May 2023 at HCC Northeast College. He took the helm of the Engineering COE on May 1.
"I am excited to be back in the Engineering COE and look forward to helping our students succeed and transfer to four-year institutions," Dr. Argin said.
Dr. Argin earned his Ph.D. from Arizona State University in electrical engineering. Toward the end of his Ph.D. studies, he oversaw K-12 education at the STEM-focused charter school system in Arizona as a principal and superintendent/CEO of schools. He continued to work in charter schools in Arizona and California until 2015. During his leadership in K-12 education, Dr. Argin developed and led STEM activities and secured competitive grants for his schools.
“Mehmet brings a breadth of experience both in engineering and instruction, which makes him a great fit as dean,” Dr. Zachary Hodges, President of HCC Northwest College said. “We’re very excited to have him on our team as we continue to push innovation and entrepreneurship in teaching and learning.”
As dean, Dr. Argin will oversee the HCC Engineering programs where students complete the first two years of a four-year engineering degree and then transfer to a university to complete their degree. He will work with HCC’s university partners to advance and promote the HCC engineering academies that allow students to be co-enrolled with Texas A&M or University of Houston, simultaneously.
Dr. Argin is active in professional service as a member of the Harmony Public Schools (HPS) board and the Chair of the HPS Finance Committee. He is also a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).
