HCC Coleman College to begin offering prerequisite courses
Jan 24, 2024
Houston Community College – Coleman College for Health Sciences (HCC Coleman College) will begin offering prerequisite courses in February. This will give healthcare students the option to take their required courses at the same campus rather than transfer when it is time to begin their specialized program.
Phillip Nicotera, M.D., president of HCC Coleman College, believes the additional course offerings will benefit students.
“Until now, our students have taken their health science courses at HCC Coleman College and their prerequisite courses, such as English and Biology, at another HCC campus or college,” Nicotera said. “Now they’ll be able to start and finish their education in the same place if they choose to do so.”
“The benefit of starting and ending at Coleman is that our healthcare students will have the same advisors from beginning to end. We believe students will appreciate the consistency and have stronger relations with the staff and faculty who wish to see them succeed,” Nicotera added.
Jeff Gricar, Ed.D., dean of health sciences at HCC Coleman College, echoed Nicotera’s enthusiasm.
“We’re excited we can offer our students the opportunity to complete prerequisite courses at Coleman” Gricar said. “These courses provide the foundational knowledge necessary for students to be successful in their chosen healthcare field. In addition, offering these academic courses at our location will help students build a stronger connection to the college and to their peers, which should result in greater success for the student.”
The following courses will be available for the Late Start semester that begins Feb. 12: ENGL 1301 – Composition I; ENGL 1302 Composition II; HUMA 1301 – Introduction to Humanities; MATH 1342 – Elementary Statistical Methods; PHIL 2306 – Introduction to Ethics; and PSYC 2301 – General Psychology.
More prerequisite courses will be added in the summer, according to Gricar.
HCC Coleman College is the only HCC campus dedicated to the science science professions and is located in the Texas Medical Center. It offers more than 20 certificate and associate programs as well as a bachelor’s degree program. To learn more, visit hccs.edu/Coleman.
